Access the Journal
How members, libraries and everyone else read the Journal, in print and online.
Members
Every member receives the printed Journal four times a year and has online access to every issue since 1937 through EBSCOhost, at no extra charge. Access codes change each quarter and are emailed to members by the Society. They are for members' personal use only; sharing them is prohibited by the Society and by EBSCO.
Each article and review page on this site has a "Read on EBSCO" link that takes you straight to that item once you are signed in. If you have not received this quarter's code, email jmhsmh@vmi.edu.
Online only
Members who prefer not to receive the printed Journal can opt out; membership costs the same either way. Email the Journal office to switch.
Libraries and institutions
The full text of the Journal, from 1937 to the current issue with no embargo, is in two EBSCO databases: America: History and Life with Full Text and Historical Abstracts with Full Text. A library needs only one of them. Once licensed, the Journal is also reachable through the other EBSCOhost databases that index it, including Academic Search and EBSCO Discovery Service.
Institutions can also subscribe to the printed Journal. See Membership for institutional rates.
Buy an article or a back issue
Anyone can buy a single article from any issue as a PDF, sent by email from the Journal office during business hours, for $10.
Printed back issues from 2001 onward are $20 a copy in the United States and Canada, $25 elsewhere, while stocks last.
Order a back issue (US and Canada)Order a back issue (overseas)
Reviewers, and the authors and publishers of books reviewed in the Journal, are entitled to a free electronic copy of the published review: members through their EBSCO access, others by writing to the Journal office.
Missing an issue?
If your copy of the Journal has not arrived, email jmhsmh@vmi.edu with your name and mailing address. If your address has changed, update it in the membership portal first.
Back-issue exchange
Members and libraries sometimes offer their collections of back issues to a good home. If you have issues to give away, or are looking for some, email the Journal office and we will connect donors with recipients.
