The Journal of Military History

Submitting an article

The Journal publishes scholarly articles on the military history of all eras and regions, and is fully refereed. Manuscripts are submitted through the Journal's online system as Word files.

  • The manuscript must not have been published elsewhere or be under consideration by another publisher.
  • About thirty double-spaced pages, roughly 8,000 to 10,000 words. Notes, tables and charts do not count toward the limit.
  • Double-spaced with wide margins, pages numbered consecutively after the title page, notes numbered consecutively from the beginning in Arabic numerals.
  • Leave your name out of the manuscript itself: submissions go to referees anonymously.
  • Style follows The Chicago Manual of Style. The editors may suggest changes for clarity and economy, in consultation with the author, and are the final arbiters of usage, grammar and length.

Questions about a submission go to the editors at EditorsJMH@vmi.edu.

Illustrations

Authors are encouraged to supply maps, charts, line drawings and photographs. Cost and layout mean two or three illustrations must suffice for most articles, though exceptions are possible. Submit them as PDF, JPEG or TIFF files at print resolution. The author is responsible for obtaining permission to publish any copyrighted material.

Open access policy

The Society holds the copyright in the Journal, in print and online, and protects it on behalf of its international membership. The editors will not consider any article whose publication would infringe that copyright, and no version of a work published in the Journal may be posted on an open access website, including an author's personal site.

There is one exception. Authors who prepared their work while employed by a government institution, or with support from a public or private granting agency, may deposit the published version in that institution's or agency's electronic archive when required to do so.

Reprints and copyright requests

Requests to reprint or otherwise reuse articles from the Journal are handled by the Copyright Clearance Center.
